History, Background and Ethos of 1066 Swimmers

1066 Swimmers was established in 1991 with a simple aim: to promote swimming in a friendly, supportive and encouraging environment. Affiliated to Swim England, the club was created to give swimmers the opportunity to learn, improve and, where appropriate, progress towards competitive swimming.

Our Background

The club is run on a not-for-profit basis for the benefit of its members. It is supported by a dedicated team of parent volunteers, qualified teachers and coaches, and older squad swimmers who help encourage and guide younger members. This community-led approach has always been central to the identity of 1066 Swimmers.

Over the years, the club has been recognised for the quality of its work and commitment to good practice. In 2003, 1066 Swimmers achieved Silver Swim21 accreditation, becoming the first club in the Southeast Region to do so. The club also received Sport England Club Mark recognition and was awarded Sussex Swimming Club of the Year 2002–03.

Developing Swimmers at Every Stage

1066 Swimmers provides a progressive pathway for children from the age of 4, beginning with water confidence, water skills and stroke technique. Swimmers move through the club’s lesson groups at their own pace, building ability and confidence before progressing towards transition groups and, when ready, squad swimming.

The transition group, around Stage 6/7, provides an important bridge between lessons and squads. It helps swimmers develop stamina, fitness and technique while giving them time to grow in confidence. The club also welcomes swimmers who have outgrown swim schools but wish to continue developing their skills in a supportive club setting.

For swimmers who want to take part in competition, squads offer opportunities ranging from club championships to open competitions at different levels. However, competition is not the only measure of success at 1066 Swimmers. Many members swim for fitness, friendship, enjoyment and personal achievement.

Our Ethos

At the heart of 1066 Swimmers is the belief that every swimmer should be treated as an individual. Progress is based on confidence, skill development, effort and readiness, rather than pressure or comparison. Each group is led by a teacher qualified to at least Swim England Level 2, with additional support from experienced swimmers within the club.

The club encourages older swimmers to share their experience with younger members, helping to create a positive cycle of learning, support and community spirit. Where possible, 1066 Swimmers also supports members aged 16 and over who wish to volunteer and work towards becoming qualified swimming teachers, helping them gain confidence, responsibility and valuable experience.

1066 Swimmers remains proud of its friendly, inclusive and supportive ethos. Whether a swimmer is learning the basics, developing technique, preparing for competition, or swimming for fitness and enjoyment, the club aims to provide a welcoming environment where every member can progress, belong and enjoy the water.
